Scout Religious Awards

Feb. 20th 2009

The Boy Scout Awards

LIGHT OF CHRIST is a program designed for Cub or Wolf Cub Scouts in Grades 2 or 3. The program helps the child develop a personal relationship with Jesus, coming to see him as a real person and friend. It consists of five family oriented programs to be completed at home. A parent guide is included in the activity book.

PARVULI DEI, “Children of God”, is a program designed for Cub Scouts or Webelos Scouts who are in the third grade or older. The program helps the young scouts discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of families and parishes, to experience what it means to be a “Child of God” and to feel God’s love. It is facilitated at home by the parents in a family environment. A guide for parents is included in the student program book.

AD ALTARE DEI is the oldest and best known Boy Scout Religious Emblem, established in 1926 for ‘loyalty and fidelity’ for Boy Scouts who also served as parish Altar Boys. The words Ad Altare Dei means “I go to the Altar of God”, and the program helps Boy Scouts in grades 7 though 10 learn more about their Catholic faith, especially about the seven Sacraments - the gifts of our faith which lead us “to the altar of God”. The program is guided by a trained counselor and is facilitated at the troop level. A Board of Review and participation in a scout retreat or day of recollection are required.

POPE PIUS XII RELIGIOUS EMBLEM is the highest Catholic Boy Scout Religious Award and it is designed for high school aged Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts who have already earned the Ad Altare Dei emblem. The program invites the candidate to look at his daily life and to consider how he can make a difference in our world. The program is guided by a trained counselor and since the program is facilitated at the troop level it provides an opportunity for faith sharing among peers. It challenges the candidate to consider his personal talents and abilities as he makes his choice of vocation, as he finds his place in the Catholic faith community. A Board of Review and participation in a scout retreat or day of recollection are required.

Girl Scout Religious Awards

FAMILY OF GOD is a program with six sessions offered for Brownie level Girl Scouts in Grades 2 or 3. The program helps children discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of a family and as a member of God’s family. The program is facilitated by the parents in a family environment. A guide for parents is included in the candidate’s workbook.

I LIVE MY FAITH is a program designed for Girl Scouts in Grades 4, 5, and 6. The program helps develop an awareness of the role that God and the Church play in their daily lives. It helps the youth to become aware that living the Christian faith involves relationships with family, friends, and neighbors. The candidates work in a group with a moderator to complete the activities in their project book.

THE MARIAN MEDAL is a program designed for Girl Scouts and in Grades 7, 8, or 9 or ages 12-15. The program helps the Girl Scouts to come to an understanding of what it means to live the Magnificat and “Proclaim the greatness of the Lord” through a study and reflection on Mary, the Mother of God. It offers the opportunity to reflect upon Mary as an important role model for women in the Church and the honor that our faith bestows on her. The projects and group meetings are guided by a trained facilitator and a Board of Review is required.

THE SPIRIT ALIVE This program is designed for those in high school (grades 9-12) who are in the senior level of Girl Scouts. It assists them in discovering how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling them to greater participation in the church’s ministry.

The four chapters cover:

* The Holy Spirit Alive in Scripture
* The Holy Spirit Alive in the Catholic Church
* The Holy Spirit Alive in Prayer
* The Holy Spirit Alive in Your Life

Activities are an integral part of The Spirit Alive process. Because different people have different learning styles, there are four categories of activities to choose from for chapters 1-3: written, artistic, interactive, and digital. The activity in Chapter 4 is the service component of the process.
It is a two year process and facilitated in groups by a trained facilitator.
