2012 Diocesan Adult Awards

Bronze Pelican Award
The Bronze Pelican is presented to Catholic men and women who are registered adult Scout Leaders in the Boy Scouts or Venturing. The award recognizes outstanding spiritual and leadership contributions that have been made over a minimum period of three years to the Catholic Scouting program, the spiritual development of Catholic youth in the programs of the Boy Scouts of America, in addition to service in the parish or diocese, service in Scouting and Service to the Community. Three deserving Boy Scout leaders from the Diocese of Worcester have been chosen to receive the award for the Year 2012

Alfred F. Lagor, Jr and Dianne M. Lagor
St. Brigid Parish, Millbury

Al and Diane, married for 44 years, parents to three children, grandparents to 11 have touched many young men and women during the years each has been involved in scouting. Both have a vibrant faith that they live and share with others. Al and Diane are well respected in their community and both bring the faith to their training roles in scouting, integrating the Scout Oath and Law into their life, their family’s life and the life of the community and their church.

Deacon Richard C. Martino
St. Matthew, Southboro

Deacon Dick was a scout as a youth and has been active in supporting religious scouting activities in the local area towns and parishes for several years. With his support, promotion, and faithful participation, there has been improved understanding and added emphasis on religious scouting participation by both youth and adults. He has co-facilitated classes for the Pius XII Award. Deacon Dick has taken an active part in the Diocesan religious Awards Boards of Review and Spiritual Days of Recollection.

St. George Emblem
The National Catholic Committee on Scouting, acting through the Diocese of Worcester, awards the St. George Emblem, the highest Catholic religious award named after the patron Saint of Scouting. The St. George Emblem is presented to members of the laity and clergy, Scouters and non-Scouters alike, who have made significant and outstanding contributions to the spiritual development of Catholic youth through Scouting. Work accomplishment and sustained dedication rather than a specific number of years in Scouting is the criteria for receiving this emblem.
After a lapse of several years when this award was not presented, the diocese of Worcester, through the Office for Youth Ministry and the Catholic Committee on Scouting is pleased to present this award for the year 2012 to three deserving adult Scouters.

George Giannotti,
St. Rose of Lima Parish, Northboro
George actively promotes religious scouting activities in the Worcester Diocese, Knox Trail Council Tri-River District area. He has been instrumental in providing visibility to, and promotion of, religious scouting activities and awards, and has helped to organize a local committee dedicated to helping Catholic youth achieve these awards. He has personally facilitated classes encoraging scouts to complete their age-appropriate relegious award programs and has participated in the Diocesan review boards, days of recollection, and awards ceremonies.

John C. Harrington,
St. Rose of Lima Parish, Northboro
John has embraced scouting from his boyhood into his manhood. John is an Eagle Scout with Eagle Bronze Palm and Gold Palm Awards. He is the recipient of the Ad Altare Dei Emblem as a boy and has served throughout his life in various leadership capacities. John epitomizes someone who lives his faith daily and through his deeds and example one can see the fruits of his labors. He is an truly example that all scouts, leaders, and adults for that matter can strive to emulate as a true model of service , the service to which we are all called as disciples of Christ.

Michael Merolli,
St. Gabriel Parish, Upton/Mendon
Mike is a true leader among his peers and for years has successfully instilled in our scouts the true meaning of a Scout is Reverent. He has been the driving force behind so many boys earning the Ad Altare Dei award. In every part of Mike’s life it is either scouting or the church and quite often it is both at the same time. Whether it is talking to the boys or challenging adults, Mike is not afraid to witness to his faith and he does it in an open, friendly even inspiring way.

In the name the Office for Youth ministry of the Diocese of Worcester, congratulations to all the young people who earned their religious awards this year and to those adult leaders recognized for their service to our youth.

After two weekends of games in a double elimination Qualifying Tournament sponsored by Your Diocesan Office for Youth Ministry held at St Leo Athletic Center in Leominster, the finals matches were held on Sunday March 11, 2012.

The matches each opened with introduction of the teams and coaches, the CYO Prayer, followed by the Oath of Good Sportsmanship and the National Anthem which was sung by Michael Kroll a 3rd Grade Student at St. Leo School. The winners of their respective games won the privilege to represent the Diocese of Worcester at the Region One New England CYO Tournament in Burlington VT on March 30,31 and April 1, 2012.

In the 5/6 grade girls division, St. Anne of Webster defeated St. Leo “1” of Leominster by a score of 24-4. The game MVP voted by officials, tournament coordinator and the director of Your Diocesan Office for Youth ministry was Evangeline Margaritis of St. Anne School.

In a highly competitive matchup that went down to the final seconds between Our Lady of the Valley School of Uxbridge and St. Anthony School of Fitchburg in the 5/6 grade boys division, OLV defeated St . Anthony by a score of 34-31. Ryan Hourihan of OLV was named game MVP.

The 7/8 grade boy’s final pitted St. Louis of Webster against St. Peter-Marian CC Jr. HS of Worcester with SPM prevailing by a score of 48-35. Game MVP was Seamus Leary of SPM.

The 7/8 grade girls contest required the playing of two games between cross town rivals St. Leo and St. Anna both of Leominster because of the double elimination format. St. Leo prevailed in the second game by a score of 36-32. The game MVP was Alana Keating of St. Leo.

Congratulations to all the winners ! Godspeed and Good Luck in Burlington,VT.

A special thanks to Msgr. John E. Doran pastor of St. Leo’s for his enthusiastic support of the NEQT and for the use of the wonderful athletic center for the two weekends of the Tournament. Also a special word of sincere gratitude for the warm hospitality of parents and everyone associated with the athletics program at St. Leo’s.

The Championship and Consolation Games in Division A and Division B
of the Diocese of Worcester 2012 Boys’ Basketball League
were held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Sunday February 26, 2012.

This closed out the OYM Boy’s Basketball League Season.
Twenty-three Teams in two divisions each played 10 regular season games
and everyone made the single-elimination playoffs.

In Division B Team # 22 St. Matthew, Southboro defeated Team # 16 St. Spyridon, Worcester 62-42 in the Championship Contest, while Team # 19 Our Lady of the Rosary, Worcester defeated Team # 15 St. George, Worcester 49-43 in the consolation game.

In Division A , Team # 5 St. Columba (A) , Paxton defeated Team # 8 St. Mary of the Hills, Boylston 53-40 in the Championship matchup going undefeated for the 2012 season while Team # 6 St. Mary (A2), Shrewsbury defeated Team # 1 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 48-44 in the consolation tilt.

Congratulations to all on a great season.

OF NOTE: The 2012 New England Tournament is being hosted in Burlington, VT. On Friday March 30, Saturday March 31 and Sunday April 1, 2012 as a Single elimination basketball tournament.
Local winners from 5 New England States in grades 5 through 12 will be arriving in Burlington to compete for a New England CYO Championship title. The diocese of Worcester is sending four teams based on who wins the NEQT. The New Englands will take place at eight gymnasiums in the area, and five hundred local hotel rooms have been blocked to accommodate the expected players, families and friends.
